Beware the Iris of March! (The Seasonal Series)
Wedding season tends to start around March with the weather generally getting a bit milder and the days longer. So, with weddings in mind, here are some top flower picks for March.
The classic Spring favourites like tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, muscari and anemones will already have been available for at least a couple of months and will still be in season. Whilst daffodils come in a range of yellows and whites and muscari a range of blues and whites, tulips have a whole host of colours to choose from. The combination of these bright and pastel shades can make for a really lovely Springy vibe to your wedding.
You may know that ‘Beware the Ides of March’ is a famous saying from Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar, referring to the 15th March, the day Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC. Ides originally marked the middle of the month, but this year, Mother’s Day falls on 15th March! March sees the appearance of iris so for those purple lovers, these really add that pop of colour and would look lovely in a Mother’s Day bouquet! They are a more unusual choice for a wedding too, so if you’re looking for something a bit different and unique, iris are a great choice. They take a few days to open but if you give the heads a gentle flick, it can encourage them to open up quicker if they’re not too tight in bud!
Violets are violet by name and by colour and they are available at this time of year. However, they come as a plant rather than a cut flower, so look lovely in patio pots and hanging baskets. One way to incorporate them in your wedding could be in a planted arrangement as part of a centrepiece.

Viburnum opulus resembles a small hydrangea in appearance with a woody stem and ball-like blooms. The vibrant green variety helps break up a colour palette but they can be a bit temperamental and are prone to wilting. They tend to be a bit floppy by nature anyway, so used in the right arrangement, they can add real drama!

Eucalyptus and pittosporum are still at their best in March so are good foliage to use and a popular choice if you’re wedding planning. If you prefer that bluey-silver colour then eucalyptus is the best option. It also has a popular scent and goes well with lighter colour palettes such as pink and ivory. There are numerous varieties of eucalyptus with the most common one being cinerea, but for longer thinner leaves parvifolia and nicoli are lovely varieties or for a rounder leaf, populus is a good choice. This variety sometimes comes with pretty berries too! You can also get baby blue and gunni, which are more like the traditional cinerea but have smaller leaves. Pittosporum can be a darker leaf but is also available in variegated tones of white and green. Some varieties have smaller leaves whilst others have larger leaves.
