The Humble Buttonhole

Buttonholes can be easily overlooked. Let’s be honest, a lot of thought goes into the bridal bouquet on a wedding day. I mean it’s the perfect accessory to finish off your outfit as you walk down the aisle right?! But what about the men? The right buttonhole can really set off a suit and complete the man’s look!

Here’s some ideas to get you started...

Usually, the bridal bouquet is a bit different to the bridesmaid’s bouquets, so it’s nice to make the groom’s buttonhole stand out too by adding in a little something extra.

You can also tie his buttonhole in with the bridal bouquet by using the same colours/ flowers. For the other buttonholes e.g. groomsmen, you can then tie these in with the bridesmaid’s bouquets.

It’s all about the finishing touches so you could have the buttonholes wrapped in the same ribbon used for the bouquets or if the wedding theme is rustic, you could have the buttonholes wrapped in string.

Pocket squares are becoming the new fashion and are a great idea if you don’t want to put a pin in your jacket. They sit in the pocket rather than on the lapel and are generally slightly bigger than a traditional buttonhole.

Rose buttonholes are a popular and classy option but if you’d prefer something with a wilder feel, having a cluster of smaller flowers is a great option.

Some other things to bear in mind...

Men have their buttonholes pinned to their jackets and so they often get damaged more easily when hugging family and friends!

Their buttonholes are also out of water so if you want them to last (particularly if it’s on a hot day,) consider a longer lasting option like carnations or dried flowers.

Magnets can be used instead of a pin to attach the buttonhole to your suit but from experience, the buttonhole tends to swizzle round by itself so aren’t always as practical as they sound! They work better for a ladies’ upside-down corsage.

*I actually had my wedding photos before the ceremony! Apparently, it’s more traditional to do this in Europe but the flowers will be at their best at this point so definitely a great idea from a photo perspective!
